Cover crops improve underground microbe and vertebrate diversity, increase water absorption and retention, decrease soil temperature during summer, and protect soil wildlife against the sun rays. All this with the main goal to protect local biodiversity, improve the quality and health of the soil and also to increase the earth’s resilience to climate change. Permanent cover crops carbon-sequestration is up to five tons per hectare.
The age and superior quality of the permanent cover crop is reflected in the diverse mix of plants above the ground and in the diverse mix of soil organisms above (yeasts included) and below ground. In addition, a network of mycorrhizal fungi of superior quality is also obtained, which enhances the capture of nutrients by the vines. Without this network, the nutrients would not be able to be synthesized in order to then play an important role in the protection against several diseases and soil organisms.
Our policy is to promote and regenerate the ecosystem, promoting natural defences and avoiding chemicals: we have lavandula in the top of rows, a permanent cover crop with autochthonous chamomile and a big diversity of local plants. The aromatics marginal to the vines attract ladybugs, wasps, and other insects that are predators of harmful insects, the native trees that surround them provide habitat for the natural enemies of pests, such as birds, bats, ants, and others.
